mission
Mama Maria Kenya is a grassroots organization providing healthcare and
basic needs to the underserved communities of rural Africa through an
essential package of health services offering: basic ambulatory and
short-term inpatient care; perinatal and maternal care; vaccinations;
pediatric care; and emergency transport.
philosophy
Mama Maria Kenya is the parent organization that runs the Mama Maria Clinic. The Mama Maria Clinic is built on a staff of local, licensed care providers and professionals, and key strategic partnerships in Kenya and the US.
In addition to primary health care, Mama Maria is engaged in regular medical, nutritional, and other educational community outreach programs, runs an orphan-feeding program, and facilitates educational opportunities for the deaf of the community.
realization
MMK works hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Health, the private health sector, as well as with other NGOs and international health and faith-based institutions, businesses, and the community, to increase health resources and improve policy and level of care. Mama Maria is non-governmental, non-religious, and open to all.
MMK has a working cost-sharing model designed to help the poor. Within the rural poor of Africa exists an operational economy. We work to utilize this economy. Our clinic charges a minimal fee that even the poorest of the community can afford.
This model not only acts as a cost-sharing model but also makes health issues an important investment in the lives of local people. When the majority of the poor of these communities can afford a cell phone and minutes, they can therefore share in the cost of their own healthcare, and once they make an investment in their own health, they're more likely to cherish and improve it. Such ownership ensures treatments are followed, medicines are taken, and follow-up visits are made.
future
It is Peter Kithene's own experience growing up in this society, and his ensuing success story that fuels his passion for Mama Maria. The growth and success of his endeavor, however, continues through you. Volunteer support and monetary donations are the lifeblood of this great work, and we encourage you to explore our site to learn more about what Mama Maria is about and how you can help.
